Meet MC...

This is my BFF MC, we've been friends since I moved to Florida in 1981. I wish I had some pictures of us together back in the day to show you. I'm sure there are some SOMEWHERE, but our parents weren't as camera happy as I am. (I honestly think I have a picture of my kids with every person they've ever met...but I'm a little obsessive that way). Even if I could find pictures of us back then, I'm not sure I could post them, as neither one of us were (ahem!) the most photogenic of teen-agers. So you'll have to settle for a picture taken of us at our high school reunion last year...

Back in the summer of 1985 we were inseparable. We only lived about a 15 minute drive from each other, but for weeks on end we would spend a few nights at her house, then a few nights at my house, trading off whenever one of our parents felt like driving to the others' house.

While cleaning my closet this morning I came across this little beauty...

and it made me think of MC. You see. MC & I were OBSESSED with Live Aid. My family had cable tv (hers didn't), her family had a VCR (mine didn't) so we hatched a plan. The night before Live Aid we brought her VCR over to my house, hooked that bad boy up & set up our blankets in the family room. Thankfully, my mom waived her ban of Mtv for the occasion. We got up at the crack of dawn & started taping... we watched every minute of it & I think we filled 4 VHS tapes. Over the years, we've traded custody of those tapes, but now we both have the DVD editions. Not the same though. What fun MC & I had that summer!

Thought you might get a kick out of some of the pictures from that People Mag... (you can click to enlarge them if you want).
ahhh! Freddie Mercury. Radio Ga-Ga!

Oh how I wanted to BE Madonna! I even had a really bad Madonna perm at one point. I thought the outfit she wore to Live Aid was sooooo cool!

Look how young Jack Nicholson was!

Remember Adam Ant?! Don't drink! Don't smoke! What do you do?

Princess Di, Bob Geldof & his daughter Fifi Trixibelle. You can see what became of Fifi Trixibelle here.
My beloved Bono. Yes, those are lipstick marks. I was 15, what did you expect?! I still love me some Bono though.
I love this picture!

This old magazine is chock full of fun times...

Check out Tommy Lee & Heather Locklear. They had been dating for "over a month now". Oh and there's 19 year old Charlie Sheen discussing his recent tattoo acquisition. He said he wasn't planning on getting anymore. "One tattoo spells curiosity," he says. "Two spells complete ignorance." I wonder what 12 tattoos spell?

Here's Hulk Hogan talking about getting impatient whild filming a Love Boat episode with Bruce Jenner.

Up & commer, 21 year-old Whitney Houston talks about her first national tour...

Here's a tribute to Gay Mullins, who made Coca-Cola give us back Coke Classic. Who's idea was New Coke anyway?!

Then there's the ads...

Gatorade in a glass bottle anyone?!

Remember Pamela Ewing?! Victoria Principal actually graduated from the same high school MC & I did. Exciting, huh?

A new Astrovan?

How about some electronics?!

That was a fun trip down memory lane. I'll leave you with the finale of the British end of Live Aid. Sends a shiver down my spine! I better get back to work on that closet...

Where did I put those darn earplugs?

My little drummer boy...sans cymbals. Baby steps.

I can't believe it's over...

Last Wednesday was the big 5th grade banquet for my Ben... doesn't he look handsome all dressed up before school?

We gussied up the school cafeteria pretty well...

The theme was a Parisian Cafe'... I love the kids' renditions of the Eiffel Tower. They didn't even know they were making them to decorate their own banquet. Sneaky art teacher!

We even had a standing Eiffel Tower made out of cardboard... it was supposed to be 16' tall, but the bottom legs didn't look too sturdy, so we improvised & took them off. I still thought it was pretty impressive, especially with the lights twinkling.

Isn't this a pretty work of art?

You would never know it was on the door of a school cafeteria.

Here's Ben's place setting. Aren't those memory books cool? Absolutely stunning, right? I think whoever designed them must be an artistic GENIUS! (teehee!) Actually, I was pretty proud of how they came out. Ben's superlative for his class was "Most Likely to Be President"... maybe my politically minded dad can be his campaign manager. Leave me the heck outta that one!

They had each table come in one by one to have their pictures taken, then they were lead to their tables by their "server". Here's Ben's group... minus the other kids' faces.

Here's Ben with some of his awards. He got a medal for getting straight A's, one for perfect attendance & one for being an "Ancient Mariner"... he went straight through from Kindergarten to 5th grade. His first visit to the school was when he was a week old, when he visited his sisters' classrooms. His legs weren't even all stretched out yet.

I know my son is growing up, but I don't think he should be in a class with girls who wear shoes like this... YOWSER! You should have seen the boots she wore to the 1st semester awards ceremony... I wish girls wouldn't try to grow up so fast!

After the banquet, the rest of the school lined the halls for "Clap Out" as the 5th graders paraded through the halls. This tradition started after my girls graduated from the school (as did the banquet), I had never seen it done & I admit I was bawling like a baby.

I'm thinking the girl with the high heels was regretting that choice about now...

There's Ben...he's the one with the un-pixelated face. Duh?!

When all was said & done, we came home & had a little photo shoot with his sisters. They're so proud of their little brother. The day will come soon when he'll be resting his arms on their shoulders. *Sigh* Where does the time go?

Then he was off to his first drum lesson. Oy vey!

Perfect!

So, it's my boy's last week of elementary school. The big 5th grade banquet is on Wednesday, last day on Thursday. Although I missed the awards ceremony this morning (I didn't get the memo), Ben informed me that he got straight A's for this 9 weeks... which means he got straight A's for the year! Woohoo! He also had Perfect Attendance. That, my friends, is a PERFECT REPORT CARD!

Way to go Ben!
